So, in our previous post about the closure of the New River Path Level Crossing I included the open letter signed by local councillors from Ware and Hertford Town Councils, East Herts District Council and Hertfordshire County Council which had been sent to both the CEO of Thames Water and also Network Rail.
We have received this reply from Network Rail that states that:
'the current closure of the New River crossing is temporary. '
But then goes onto state:
'We are in discussions with Thames Water regarding the longer-term future of this footpath. We recognise the importance of this crossing to local people so we’re working to assess whether any improvements can be made to allow it to re-open safely. As you may be aware, we’ve also temporarily closed the Kings Mead level crossing. We’ll carry out work to make it safer and expect it to reopen later this year. '
So, it looks like the level crossing on 'footpath 42', further along towards Ware should open later this year (we will see if we can get a date and will post!) but that the New River Path level crossing, that provides such a wonderful circular walk from Kingmead, via Little Mead and Chadwell Spring and then back along the New River (or the other way around 😀) will be closed for the foreseeable future and possibly permanently unless new safety measures can be found and funded for this level crossing
